And Then There's This

Note from earlier: On the way to tonight’s fundraiser, the press van spotted a New Yorker giving the motorcade his middle finger. Unclear whether it was for the president, the press, the traffic jam or something else entirely.

“THE PRESIDENT: This does also remind me of the season that we’re in. Jim Messina tells this story, my campaign manager — he was in some event, and this young couple who was there with their adorable four-year-old son, and I guess there was a picture of me somewhere, and so they were very excited. They said, ‘Sammy, who’s that?’ And he said, ‘That’s Barack Obama.’ ‘And what does Barack Obama do?’ And the boy thinks for a second and he says, ‘He approves this message.’” —White House Press Office, Remarks by the President at a Campaign Event, July 30, 2012 7:56:22 PM CDT

I return to television this afternoon, just in time to be replaced by video of dancing horses. (I am available to dance like a horse, should MSNBC lose its satellite feed.)

chrismohney:

The best way to insure that a lone maniac doesn’t hurt people with guns is to make sure that everyone has guns. Just like the best way to win the war on drugs is to make sure that everyone has more drugs. Same thing with pornography. If you’re watching too much porn it’s probably because the people around you aren’t watching enough porn.

… tho personal experience suggests that if you have enough drugs and porn you’re not going to notice what the people around you are doing anyway. And I GUESS THAT’S A WIN!

Some Excerpts from the White House Pool Reports Sent Today

The streets were largely lined with people cheering, including one lady jumping up and down, waving her hands and screaming something like “Aiiiiii!”

Obama worked the rope line, and held a chunky baby on his hip, asking him, “How you doin’?” before handing him back to the man who brought him.

He worked the rope line. Lots of teenagers. There was more screaming.

Aiiii. Held a chunky baby. More screaming. This is an Oliver Stone movie.

Sex-rilegious

Via @pareen:

It is interesting that so much of what happens at the [Episcopalian] General Conventions revolves around sexual issues. Sexual behavior, almost more than any other facet of our lives, involves an urge to do what we want to do, regardless of the rules. The Primal Episcopalian, Henry VIII, split with Rome because he wanted to do what he wanted to do with regard to a sexual issue. Women were allowed to be ordained because, well, women wanted to be priests.

Am I missing something about how wanting to be a priest is a sexual issue? Except if you’re a male Catholic, I mean.

The whole post is pretty hilarious.

“Biden only mentioned Mitt Romney a couple of times. He said Romney, like other Republicans, are decent people who simply don’t understand what it’s like to be unemployed or hold a job that doesn’t match one’s qualifications.” —Hey, Romney’s unemployed right now! As for the latter: Well, if he actually gets elected… (via VPOTUS pool report July 9, 2012 3:41PM)

“I don’t think the common person is getting it … My college kid, the baby sitters, the nails ladies — everybody who’s got the right to vote — they don’t understand what’s going on. I just think if you’re lower income — one, you’re not as educated, two, they don’t understand how it works, they don’t understand how the systems work, they don’t understand the impact.” —

This woman is forgetting about someone else that doesn’t understand the impact of stuff — like, say, words.

“Unlike playful engagement with peers, deliberate practice is not inherently enjoyable. It … does not involve a mere execution or repetition of already attained skills but repeated attempts to reach beyond one’s current level which is associated with frequent failures.” —From David Shenk’s “The Genius in All of Us: New Insights into Genetics, Talent and IQ,” quoted in Delancey Place’s daily email. It describes exactly what it’s like to write for a living. Or what it’s like for me to write for a living.
